During the last round of CUPE 3902 Unit 3 bargaining, the Union raised a number of issues related to Writing Instructors. In order to give those issues the consideration they deserved, the Union and the Employer agreed to create a joint working group on Writing Instructors that would convene outside of the regular bargaining cycle, but that would nonetheless have the power to recommend revisions to the Collective Agreement that could take effect during the life of the current agreement itself.
The members of the Provostial Working Group on Writing Instructors are pleased to announce that the group has completed its work, having reached an agreement that offers enhanced job security to long-serving Writing Instructor 2s.
The memorandum, which will be incorporated in the Unit 3 Collective Agreement as Appendix B-2, makes a commitment to offer future contracts to certain writing instructors.
Under the terms of the memorandum, those Writing Instructor 2s who have served at that rank for at least five consecutive years in a single Writing Centre, with a minimum average of 300 hours per academic year based on the three most recent years in that Writing Centre, will be granted priority for employment in the three consecutive years following achievement of eligibility. Having priority means that each year, such WI2s will be offered a contract of no fewer than 300 hours, normally over two-terms, in each of the next three consecutive academic years. Priority will be renewed if the WI2 continues to demonstrate superior performance. Seven long-serving WI2s will immediately benefit from this program starting in the 2016-17 academic year.
The establishment of this agreement, which marks a positive step forward with respect to job security for long-serving WI2s, would not have been possible without the hard work of all parties involved, and especially not without the open and collegial discussions between Writing Centre Directors and Unit 3 Writing Instructors that attended this work.
