Memo re: H1N1 and CUPE 3902 members
This memo has answers to important questions about H1N1, the University's response and your rights and responsibilities.
The Union has been in discussions with the University Administration throughout the Fall around the University’s response to the H1N1 pandemic. The most up-to-date information can be found on the link off the main UofT home page. Please check that link regularly for the most current updates.
SICK LEAVE
The first and most important thing to know is that if you are ill, especially with the H1N1 symptoms, you should stay home or, if at work, go home. Keeping those who are ill out of contact with large numbers of other people is key to preventing the rapid spread of a virus like H1N1. Our collective agreements all make provision for sick time. You should use this time if you need to be home yourself or need to care for a sick dependent. If you either run out of sick time or face any difficulties using your sick leave, please contact the Union. The Employer is not currently requiring sick notes from members with flu-like symptoms.
VACCINATIONS
As of today in Toronto and in Peel, Halton and Durham, vaccinations at public health clinics and doctors’ offices are open to all residents.
CONTINGENCY PLANS
All divisions have in place contingency plans for continuity of operations. Of course, one aspect of the pandemic is that the pace, timing and depth of the incidence of serious symptoms is unpredictable. In the event that the pandemic worsens and large numbers of staff fall ill simultaneously, other members of staff may be asked to fill in to keep programs running. In other words, members may be asked to do work other than that which was set out in their job descriptions in this kind of eventuality. We have been assured that any such extra work would be paid. If you are asked to do this or have any questions or problems, please contact the Union. We think it would be appropriate, if possible, to pitch in and help in such a situation.
In the event that there are deferred exams arising out of student absences, grading of such exams would constitute additional work after the end of the contract that would have to compensated for accordingly. If there are any problems or issues in this regard, please contact the Union.
SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS
If you are a member who, because of a particular underlying medical condition (for instance), needs special accommodation in your work on account of the pandemic, please contact the Union and we can assist you with making a request for accommodation through the Health and Wellbeing Office.
