About CUPE

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is Canada’s largest union.  It represents more than 620,000 members in a wide range of occupations, including over 50,000 people employed in Canadian Universities.  CUPE enjoys tremendous influence in higher education and has been able to set high standards for university collective agreements.

At its core, CUPE is based on the principle of democratic local control.  As a bargaining unit within CUPE, postdocs would set their own agenda, elect their own bargaining committee and decide on their own goals and objectives.  CUPE provides its members with the tools they need to advocate effectively for themselves.
