Labour of Love: Conference Call

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANEL PROPOSALS
LABOUR OF LOVE?: PRECARIOUS WORK AND THE FUTURE OF ACADEMIC WORKERS
CUPE 3902 UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
TORONTO, ONTARIO
APRIL 26, 2019
The Precarity Working Group is a team of dedicated University of Toronto Unit 3 members who have developed an educational and mobilizing campaign around academic precarious work called Precarious Situation. This group is dedicated to research, mobilization, and member education around the precarious situation of contract academic workers on campus.

Labour of Love?: Precarious Work and the Future of Academic Workers is open to workers from all academic institutions. We invite proposals for papers and panel presentations that engage the theme of precarious work in academia from a range of theoretical, normative and/or experiential perspectives.

Proposals should be approximately 300 words, double-spaced in 12pt font, and submitted to Vice Chair, Unit 3, Kristin Cavoukian: vc3@cupe3902.org. We welcome work on the following themes and topics:

  • The growing need for academic labour;
  • The unique employee-worker relationship in the academic sector;
  • The  effect of precarious work on academic workers;
  • The legal and social implications of precarious work in academia;
  • The effect of precarious work on marginalized groups and equity-seeking workers;
  • The everyday experiences of people working in precarious contracts;
  • Other topics addressing the current circumstances of precarious academic workers and the future of academia

This interdisciplinary conference offers academics and workers an opportunity to explore what it means to do precarious work and how to address its challenges. While open to all academic workers, preference will be given to contract academic workers who are experiencing precarious circumstances firsthand.

The conference will take place on Friday April 26th, 2019 in downtown Toronto (location to be determined). Deadline for submission is Friday, January 25, 2019. Accepted proposals will be notified by Friday, February 22, 2019. Please note that The Precarity Working Group does not have a large budget to cover travel costs from out of province, although we welcome submissions from those outside of Ontario.
